Flesh flies are ovoviviparous, getting their name from their larval phase. Unlike most flies, females will deposit live, hatched maggots directly onto decaying matter including dead carcasses, rotting meat, and occasionally open wounds of living mammals instead of laying eggs. Once they reach their adult stage, they transition to feeding on liquids such as flower nectar and sap.
