Diabolical Ironclad Beetle
Phloeodes diabolicus
These are flightless beetles native to North America and are detritivores, feeding on fungi and decaying wood. As its name suggests, this beetle is incredibly tough, with the ability to handle forces 39,000 times its own body weight. Parts of its exoskeleton connect with interlocking pieces, allowing for more equal distribution of heavy pressure. It also has an unusually long lifespan, living up to 8 years.
